Title: How old are you?
Post by: MMTA on January 10, 2009, 01:45:31 AM
Hello, everyone!

One of new members, NJ_21, raised an interesting question about the age of our members, and so I'm setting-up a new poll to give us a chance to see the current age-range of the people that hang-out in our forum.

Please could you log-in, select which age range you are and submit your vote.

This will be a very interesting poll  ;)

Cheers,

MMT

I think another important question is how old will you be when you plan to get LL, or when you had it done. I'll be 33 since I plan to go either in late May or early June. :(

34. I would go ahead with the surgery, but blood pressure and circulation problems make it impossible in the near future. I fear age will eventually rule me out of conventional LL treatment.

I was 45 when I had LL, i'm 47 now and so glad i went ahead and had it done.

I read on a recent post there was a guy of 56 getting LL!. So if you think your too old to get it done most of it's in the mind.

We often impose our own invisible barriers and restrictions in life and that's sad .If we have mental and physical health and fitness then our bodies can cope. (generally speaking of course).

I'm 22

My goal is to get LL before 25, I want to enjoy my new height as much as I can and as soon as possible. Recently I met this amazingly beautiful girl, the only thing is..........she's about my same height, and obviously taller with heels.

So far we've gone out on one date (don't know how i got that first date though, I consider her out of my league, lol).

The thing is...I would definitely be more confident around her post LL than right now, I'm sure all of you veterans would agree with me on this last point.

Right now I'm 21 and still an undergraduate in college. My plan is to focus on school, get my Ph D. in psychology, get a great paying job, and save up my money. I'm hoping that I can accomplish all this, and maybe work on some confidence while I'm still short, by the time I'm 30.

I'd love to get it done now when I'm young and can somewhat afford to spend a year abroad (hopefully, like MMT was thinking, China for the tibias/fibulas and Serbia for the femurs) but I don't have nearly enough money to attempt it right now. Also, since my parents are VERY against me getting leg lengthening done, along with the rest of my family, my doctors, my teachers, most of my friends, and God, its up to me to earn the money to do this. In addition, if I do it like this, then if I do need to take out a loan, I can have the skills I need to pay it off on my own.

But I wish you luck with getting it done by your 23rd birthday. Getting it done by then is truly an accomplishment. Just out of curiosity, what are you studying?

The results are interesting - we have a normal bell curve around 21, which is much younger than I thought, but the results don't lie.

That said, getting LL at the age of 21 is something that I would have done it it was available - it would definitely help people with their career development and love life!

That is interesting, but people over 50 have more money and more time on their hands, so they can probably get away with it!

I'm 32, will likely be 33 when I start.  I read about LL back when I was about 25, but the options then seemed more limited and more expensive (Russia, for 100k).

I'm 5'8.5" and have resorted to stuffing my shoes and wearing lifts to feel more comfortable with women.
( I can pull off 5'10" with a thick-heeled oxford and a combo of lifts and insoles.)

Adding 2 inches won't make me look much different in my suits and jeans, but it will be nice to walk around the beach in my flip flops and not feel "short-ish"

BTW -- my advice to the younger folks on here is to develop some marketable skills that are portable and can command a high salary.  Doing IT work (I'm a UNIX/DBA admin) fits the bill.  In these type of fields, you will most likely move around frequently anyway, so you can position your surgery between jobs, and maybe do some work remotely while you're laid up?

Not even that, it would be surreal to actually walk around in flip flops (with jeans etc) period.

I am 15 and my doctor told me my bone age is 17 when I was 14. Meaning that my growth plates are almost fused. Being only 5"4 and almost done growing at 14 I was looking for every way possible to get taller. I would love to be 5"9+ but seeing that theres a chance I wouldn't reach that naturally I discovered this website and I have read a lot of posts here and even made an account!

It's nice that most of these LL doctors don't discriminate against older folks that want LL.  LL has only recently been available as a cosmetic enhancement, so older people can't be blamed for not taking advantage of it when they were young -- this sort of thing wasn't universally available when they were young, only in specialized clinics in a few countries (like Russia).

I saw on Dr. Betz's website that they had a 68 year old as a patient.  Congrats for that patient for taking the steps toward a more confident future.  I wish other aspects of our modern youth-obsessed world would have the maturity to recognize that ability knows few bounds.

Yes, health is more important than age when it comes to LL!

Health is way more important than age! Bone tissue regenerates within a certain time frame up to old age as far as I know.

Exception would probably be osteoporosis.

To do LL in your 30s and 40 ies should be absolutely no issue as long as you don't have other health issues.

I'm 18.

This survery is a bit statistically flawed in my opinion... since the 18-20 age interval is only 2 years apart while all the other ones are 4. Under18 and Over50 are also different ranges. I'm just saying it Might not be a significant bell curve if the ranges were different. But great survey though :). Kind of what I expected I guess.

Actually, he's 70 years old, and he's still lengthening - he has about another month left.   He is Betz's oldest patient to date, and Betz told me he is one of his best.  He can walk almost normally (no duck-ass) and he has virtually no pain.  Patients more than half his age can't hold a candle next to him.   He also one of the the nicest people I've met here at Lebach.

Hi Topshelf,

It was good meeting you too.  I've been w/ him everyday since I got here, and we regularly discuss information gleaned from this forum all the time.  We've become very close, and I know him very well.  I think his anonymity is safe, but I'll let him know tonight when I see him for dinner that he was mentioned.  I'm sure he'll be ok.

Plans are proceeding.  I've paid the fee, and will be joining your ranks as a veteran in the very immediate future.

Good luck on your recovery.

Ok, I asked his permission via D a while back and he was quite clear to me.
So you are back in Germany?  Do you have surgery scheduled?
Of all the people I met there, I think this is really going to change you so much for the better.  BadBoy is a confident, intelligent, good looking guy (no homo) and will be even better with a couple of inches of more height.  You are gonna kick ass, good luck and keep in touch.

Title: Re: How old are you?
Post by: badboy on May 02, 2010, 04:34:57 PM
No worries.  He is intensely private, but Betz talks about him (especially his age) to every prospective patient. However, I'm not going to divulge any more identifying info about him in this forum.

Wow, thanks very much for the compliments - I really appreciate the encouragement as I'm nervous as hell.  Yes, I'm back in Germany, and I'm locked and loaded for surgery in a couple days.  I took your advice and paid extra for a private hospital room, so I don't have to deal with snorers.

Title: Re: How old are you?

Excellent, I just hope there is a private room available.  Good for you, and good luck again.  It is a long road ahead but I know you have planned well.
How long will you stay?
Yes, Betz is proud of this patient, I thought he was making a mistake operating on him, but obviously he knows better than I.
Don't do that Skin Wave thing, waste of money and time.

Thanks for bringing up the 70 year old LL'er. That's very good inspiration. Although I am 42 and I have never for one second changed my mind about having LL, I find it very inspiring hearing about 70 year olds out there having this surgery. My only regret though is not having this surgery much much sooner..to reap the full benfit of being taller. I am just very grateful I have been aging very well (so far)..and so it's never too late to have LL and the desire to be taller never does go away.

Thanks Topshelf. Betz confirmed a private room for me today, so I guess I lucked out.  I'm planning to stay about a month just like you, and then finish clicking back home. But my return date is open-ended, so I'm not leaving until I can easily click independently.

Yeah, I remember the Skin Wave thing that Betz took us to.  I was skeptical, and I remember it was too painful for D.

Galaxystar, 42 years is not old at all!  There is currently a female patient in her 50s that I'm sure I'll be meeting soon.

I've come to learn that age is not as important a determinant for success as a positive attitude from the start, even if you run into complications.  I met Tasmin, a beautiful young woman, who ran into a lot of rare complications that would faze most patients, but you would never know it if you see her - she is just always so cheerful and happy (search for her postings in this forum).  It has been my privilege to have met some of the most positive people in the planet here that span the entire age range, and they have all been supportive, encouraging and non-judgmental.  I will be drawing on their positive energy as I embark on my own LL journey in two days.

badboy, I think I can speak for all future LLers when I say that no diary addition is redundant. Everyone has a unique POV.
Plus, as many veterans have mentioned, it can be quite therapeutic for the person undergoing LL and you can at the same time draw support and cheers from this forum. But of course it's up to you and I wish you the very best!

I'm 20 and 4 months now and I think there is still a great chance (80%) of me getting LL started before 25. Just one more semester before I can graduate and start saving every penny I get (depends how long it takes before I get a real job).

Looking at the poll we need to remember that the older people get the less likely they are to hang out at an online forum so they are underrepresented and therefore the poll does not give fair distribution of votes from all ages. But still young people will make up the far majority I'm sure.

This confirms my suspiction that it's primarily young people who want this done. Where it gets really interesting is why.
1. Is it because we are more focused on looks and opinions of other people? Will we eventually "mature" and care less?
2. Is it because of a difference in how we look at surgery in general? Our modern-science generations will maybe always, even when we get old, think that doing this type of surgery is more OK than our previous generations thinks?

I'd like to think it's the second. That we as humans are now so skillful that we can do these things even though we are not critically sick. We can do it relatively safely and in that way fight off a big issue that many of us have. If I get this done I hope that I'd still be glad I did it when I get old. I hope I won't look back and think how ignorant I was and how much money and time i waisted on doing and on thnking of doing it. And how much BS I put my body though.

I am currently 19 and will be turning 20 this July.  My limb lengthening surgery will probably be sometime late next month by Dr.  Xia in Beijing.  Since I am only 168cm tall and my aim is 188cm, I will have to undergo limb lengthening twice, both the tibia and femur.  Furthermore, because of education and other issues, I decided to start tibia lengthening early and plan to do femur lengthening in late 20s.

Your lucky that you 19, whereas I'm 25 and there is little or no chance that I'll still continue to grow.So you plan to first have you tibia lengthening first then wait a few year and have your femur lengthened?

As for me personally I plan to do it all it once.Meaning that have my tibia lengthened for the first few months then when the procedure is done.I will have my femur lengthened all in 1 year time period.Since I would want my legs to appear within proportions when I leave.

Ah people under 20 nowadays are so well informed. Yesterday my sister, who is 14, told me to "pull her legs" while she grabs on the head board of the bed to help her grow taller. She also started "hanging" on the pull up bar in my room. She said all her friends are doing that. I am actually scared that she would know about LL at her young age. I can see she wants to get taller, but I don't think that's enough to go through LL...

Just wondering, what made the people over 40 years old to do LL? Especially those over 50? Lately I have been talking a lot to my parents about LL [almost 60s] and they said they can understand why I want to grow taller, but it would only be a phase. They said after LL I would wish to have saved up the money for a house or something like that.

I notice height a lot more now than I did when I was younger, and am more bothered by my vertical challenges now than I was when I was in my 20's and 30's. As a younger man whenever I felt I did not receive my due I chalked it up to be young. However, those things still happen and I'm about to be 40 years old.

I have the houses, cars, and a degree from arguably the most prestigious University on the planet. What I do not have is height. And so, if there is a way that I can trade in my short stature for a few inches then I'm doing it, age notwithstanding.

Struggled with height issues since I was 14, it doesn't go away, first I thought but now I am 17 and it has only gone worse. I think you can manage to hide your problems away, but some day when you get older, you will regret not doing anything about your height. I would pick 2x precise LL's with Dr.Paley any day over a Bugatti Veyron.

Probably in 2018 time.  That sounds a long way away but it's only 6 years.  I need to go to university first.  I stay on this forum regardless of the fact that I won't be doing ll any time soon simply because it's a nice place to talk to people.

Either way, I think I will do femurs.  My tibias are already quite long.  Here's hoping in 6 years time ll technology will be more advanced, quicker, and easier!  ;D

I just truned 53 and done my LL surgery at 52 years old.
That was a little over 4 months ago.
My surgery method was the Lenghtening And Then Nailing (LATN) under Dr Donghoon Lee (Bundang Cha Hospital) in South Korea.
I think he is best doctor in this field over there.
Currently, I'm walking a short distance without the crutches and I'm very happy with this LL surgery done.
Age!!! doesn't meaning anything to do with this surgery.  So far I am one of the good case paitent.  Because of the exellent result.

Hi Guys.

My name is Tom.  I am 47 years old and this is my story.

I was always short.  Ever since I was a kid I was one of the shortest kids in my class.  I was bright and athletic but I would get beat up constantly by bigger boys.

I learned how to hide my shame -and my big mouth.  I tried to make up for my shrimp stature by out thinking my fellow men.  Sometimes it worked, and other times I ended up looking like a jerk.

I was fairly nice looking but could never get the girls I wanted.  It sucked.  I was passed over promotions, and ignored in many conversations.  In spite of this, I used the old ' height doesnt matter' routine.

Well , it sure as sh!t matters to society, and to women.  We can try to wish it away all we want but it doesnt mean our society will.  We can overcome our shortness, but it does take monumental force of will.

At age 47 I am married and my daughter is 19.  I am a success of sorts but do not have a bunch of money .  I am sorry to ramble but I am just dumping my story off the top of my head.

I just found out about LL 7 days ago.  I was in denial, then shock, and finally now its sinking in.

I tried to make a pact with the devil when I was 17 to be 6ft tall.  Of course I didnt grow one millimeter taller, as I realized there was no devil.  But if there was, I would have sold it.

Now of course I am older.  I cannot believe we can actually grow taller artificially .  When you think about it, it was so obvious a solution wasnt it?

I am 5ft 6 1/2 inches tall.  The exact same as when I was 18.  I have not shrunk a single millimeter.  My wish is to gain 16 centimeters.  Apparenty we can do 8cm on both femurs and tibias.

I have often thought about what I will do when I do reach 6ft /6ft 1.

To be honest, besides jumping up and down for joy, my first action would be to hop on a jet back to my home in West Vancouver and beat the %!#$ out of these pricks I went to highschool with.

lol.

But I wont.  We were just kids.  I am so exicted I cant seem to hold a thought in my head.  I guess dreams really can come true.   :D

Hi Tom. It's really cool you haven't shrunk at all at 47. My father was around that height and I think he lost about 10cm, although he's about 10 years older. I have a feeling you're in a pretty decent shape without much fat or a significant beer belly. :)

Take your time and read as much info as you can here, diaries included.

A few things to mention:
1. 16 cm is a lot of lengthening. It can be done, but it is not recommended to lengthen so much. I am more on the conservatory side so personally I don't think it's a wise thing to go past 10cm (5cm tibia + 5cm femurs). A lot of serious complications can happen, it takes a lot more time, it is a lot more painful, in most cases you'll get to look disproportionate etc. Others may argue.
2. Take some photos and do mock-ups with the extra length to see how you look.
3. If you'll get to 6ft, or even less, after 2 surgeries, you can be 100% sure you will not jump up and down for joy, maybe only in spirit. :) It will take a few good years to do them and to recover. The more cm you lengthen, the more time it will take.
4. 2 LL's will cost you a sh1t load of money.
5. Set realistic goals. 5 extra cm will have a dramatic impact on you. 10 cm will be mind-blowing. Even if you choose to lengthen more, no need to set your goals too high and risk your health just for the sake of a childhood dream. As you said, you're not a kid anymore, so play it smart.
6. Good luck!

its just another reminder to us all that this height thing will remain with us for many many years.

its best to do it as soon as possible. i am in the mddle of a project and as soon as its done I am taking a fraction of my profits to do LL.

I am lucky that i grew up in africa and came to Australia when i was about 20. height was a problem but it wasnt until i got to 25 that i realised heightism was well and truelly  something that existed and that it even affected ur carreer prospects as a male. I got a serious girl friend when i was about 20 and i think it blinded me to reality because i didnt have to pick up in night clubs where being short is like death sentence.

Thank God for LL

Possibly a typo but 10cm height loss for a man has to be unheard of.

Both women and men can experience height loss with age, especially smaller framed body types, but 10 cm for a man is unusually high, unless he has some sort of spinal condition or other medical condition - and you say he's just 57 years old.

It wasn't a typo, but now that you've mentioned it I thought about it more and I'm quite sure you're right, it's less than 10cm. It's very hard to evaluate to be honest. He probably lost around 5cm, which is still quite a lot. He just turned 59 and he does have some back problems, but the main problem I think is his dreadful lifestyle and his forever expanding belly.

I've just read some articles about height loss and apparently in starts from when you're 30. Women shrink more than man (I thought it was the other way around, since man have longer torsos and most of the shrinkage happens in the torso). The bad side is that big height loss is correlated to a lot of medical conditions. This bums me out, I really need to have a talk with my old man...

For now the proportion obsessed will have to continue to dream that there will be a way to someday add a little extra height to our torsos that won't give a person cancer.

Thank you Dude!!!

The more I let it sink in, the more I am welling up inside.  I was one of these guys who thought he was an 'Alpha Male' . . . . . . . . . . . . all to find out over and over I would face very serious physical consequences if I didnt back down.

And you are right.  I went to night clubs with groups of friends.  I didnt dare go on my own as I would be IGNORED and then finally hit on by the fat girls.  Dont get me wrong, I had many a great time with portly women, but it was rather obvious that they were my only option.

Its hard entering a situation as a short guy.  Men try to dominate you, women ignore you or try to use you.  It was hard for me because I got over being short and I expected others to do the same.

They DONT

I have to relieve it every time I meet someone new.

I cant believe I have a chance to gain my missing inches.  I am so excited and am devouring this site voraciously to prepare me for the long rehabbing ahead.

I am a banker and I can work from home on a computer so I wont have to stop working.  In fact, i can work from Russia, India or China as long as they have broadband.

Do you guys think I could get each procedure done for $30k each? I assume each procedure covers both femurs and the next both tibias.

You guys are awesome.  I dont feel alone anymore  :D

Never understood how much this has been emphasised in the forum.
I think the most striking impact of LL on the world in the next years will be the threat that everyone could do it in a rather safe and affordable (I don't dare say cheap) way.

Why is that a threat? If this worries you, then you are doing LL for all the wrong reasons.  I don't care if every man in the world is 6 feet tall, so long as I am not 5'5 while everyone else is 6'.  I am not doing this so I can "tower" over people.  The most psychologically damaging part of being short is not that you do not have the superficial privilege of "tower over others," it is that you are constantly at a disadvantage in the perceptions people have about you, regardless of whatever other great qualities you may have.  These things have consequences in employment, in relationships, in social status, among other things.  Who cares if the whole world starts doing LL?

You reach is a point of diminishing once you're past 6 feet anyway.  I promise you nobody in their right mind is going to be having surgery to go from 6'2 to 6'8, just so they can stay taller than the formerly short people who've done LL.  This sort of paranoid thinking seems to be symptomatic of extreme insecurity present among many of us on this forum.  You have nothing to worry about.  Quit being paranoid.

Late 30s. . . which means I most likely can do this once on tibs and won't be back for a second round on femurs.

Can I ask why not? Do you feel you would be too old to do 2 surgeries? I am older than you are and plan to do two. Perhaps you have some insight.  :)

I understand why you would ask. But I'm not sure that I have any insight that would help anyone else's case because I am making tentative plans based on my life experiences and situation. I would say my reasons fall would into these 3 main categories:

1) Putting life on hold for too long (and too often) - the thought of giving up: walking (completely) for perhaps 4 months, getting around independently for maybe 6 months, and significant athletic endeavors for 18-24 months is already tough enough to accept. Physically, I have always wanted to do a few more competitive things in martial arts before I become a geezer. I'm already feeling like "old, seasoned veteran" when I spar with the young pups. I worry that I'd be like 45 by the time I would fully recover from femurs and get back into shape. Socially, I've always felt a little stunted because I spent a lot of my late 20s and early 30 isolating myself. I don't think I want to spend twice as much of the remaining "young and single time" I have left in frames and rehab.

2) The LL becoming too obvious - I am not planning on telling anyone about the LL other than my therapists, doctor, and perhaps one or two close friends. I have been wearing 2-3" lifts for the past 8 years, so I think/hope a 7.5cm gain would not raise too much suspicion (unless I eventually wear lifts again). Actually that is a point I have debated with myself the entire time I have been coming to the decision to do LL. Besides the safety/pain/recovery factors, I am trying to weigh wanting to be as tall as (safely) possible on one procedure vs. looking like I obviously had something done.

3) Overall Athleticism - I haven't read enough diaries of those who have lengthened twice, but for myself, I do wonder how much agility I might lose with one procedure, let alone two.

All that being said, is there a chance I might also do femurs? A slight one. I can't say for sure until after I get done with tibs. I recall reading multiple patients talking about wanting to lengthen a huge amount, and then scale back once they start lengthening. But others have started to talk about going back for femurs before even recovering from Round 1.

Hey,
I was on vacation.
You totally missed my purpose... as I'm concerned it was my fault, I'll write it down extensively.

My point was: if in a near future anyone (better to say many people, let's assume 50% of people at least) can afford that in a rather simple, safe and cheap way, that could change people's perspective on height too.
In a certain way, it's like height be inflated and consequently society will be compelled to take a new sight (insight) over that and particularly in reference to its relative weight as compared to general intelligence and so on.

So I'm not concerned about 6'2" people wanting more height cause I really believe that would turn detrimental for them, on average, as you've correctly assumed. Also, LL seems to be already a mean of arbitrary natural selection, so credit to LLers.  :)

Last thing: I don't think society will ever become free from aesthetic assessments, however, a part from height, I think many features are under our own control, to a certain extent.

How do you think whether my friends and all ppl who know me would trust that I got taller naturally or they would suspect anything?
Would people believe that it is possible to  grow up at 22 ?

Have your growth plates closed? If not, don't do this. Only go for it if your growth plates have closed.

What would happen if someone tried LL if their growth plates weren't closed?  (Don't worry.   I'm not plans on doing LL while my growth plates are open.   I'm just curious. )

Why would you ask that ?...but than why would I answer that lol.
I would think everything will keep growing naturally except for the bones that were broken and stretched in LL...

It was just curiosity.   Regardless, it sounds like a bad idea.   If you're right, doing LL too early means you wouldn't get all of your "natural" height.
