Hi Dryani, Thank you so much first for writing such an in-depth diary. You've really helped me and influenced my decision to go ahead with leg lengthening with Dr. Sarin. :) I noticed you used Xoom. com to send the doctor your payments. I think it's a good idea and much simpler than a wire transfer through my bank to his. But I really can't figure out what to put where when I'm filling out the recipient, and Dr. Sarin is bad about answering his e-mails clearly in this regard. I have some information but it's mostly very vague and I also have 2 ( ) different account numbers from him. Don't know which one to use. I also have no address. Do you think you could send me a message and tell me how to fill out these fields? --- Bank Name: Account No: First Name Last Name Address Address 2 City State PIN Code --- I appreciate it very much! I hope to hear back from you soon!

Hey Dryani, Dr. Sarin was saying the new guest house will be better and less costly. You told us it is better, so can you tell us if there is any change in the rent amount?

Guest House Update: This is an update on the new guest house and current living conditions in India. This is a very crucial update. I have been very vocal with what we need to better the living conditions here in India, and after 3 months, this is result. The Good -Suitcase (2nd floor caretaker) is very helpful. -The guest house is in a modern building and is quite nice. -Most food requests can be accommodated. -Sarin is quick to help if there is a problem - even if it concerns medical matters unrelated to leg lengthening. -The new physical therapists appear to be doing a good job. -The hospital we can take x-rays at is very close. X-rays are incredibly cheap, meaning it is not a problem to get x-rays of other bones if requested (for example, tibia patients who toy with getting femurs done in the future can get femur x-rays).
The Bad Keep in mind that many of these issues I have been vocal about since I arrived here -The areas outside of the rooms are NOT air conditioned, and staff frequently leave the windows and doors open. This means that to move outside my room means to be in extreme heat and humidity (keep in mind I am from NW USA). Since my room does not have a bathroom attached, this means that I must sweat whenever I go to the restroom. I have asked Sunny to turn on the air conditioners outside of the rooms and to close the doors and windows, but he has refused. I really had hoped that we had left the heat issues behind at the old place, but it seams that there is a fundamental issue of the staff here refusing to understand the temperature requirements of patients from other regions. Additionally, the open doors and windows let in flies; about four are in my room at any time and they are not shy about landing on my face. This also means that the dream of a cool common room to socialize with other patients has still not come to pass.
-We are not out of the woods with regard to power issues. The generator is already going offline due to problems, and I don't anticipate power issues ever being non-existent here. To be without power/AC, and in darkness, for about 6 hours a day is very draining on a patient. This pairs with the scorching hallways/common room problem above: when the power goes out, the rooms hemorrhage cool air into the hallways.
-The elevator is still out of order, and it is not likely to be fixed any time soon. When we arrived here at this new guest house I was told the elevator would take about a week to fix (quote given after an inspection), and now I am told that it will take a month or more (which translates into at least two months to be realistic). This means that to take x-rays, visit other floors, or go to the hospital, one must move on their ass up and down the stairs (in the heat).
-Medicines are not stocked properly, meaning that they are allowed to run out frequently. This is a problem because it means that late night pain can go unaddressed. With the extremely low prices of pain meds here, I don't see any reason why this should happen.
-I believe there is a problem with the internet wiring, causing frequent 404 errors while browsing. Airtel came to inspect the connection but did nothing to correct the issue. I asked Sunny to have them return, but it has not happened yet.
-From approximately 12am to 9am, there are no awake caretakers. This can be a problem for new patients struggling during the night, and for those (like myself) that sometimes have great difficulty sleeping during the night and staying awake during the day.
-Laundary cleaning is disorganized and inconsistent.
I am writing this to inform new patients of what they can expect during their stay in India, both good and bad.

Power outages are common in India due to power shortage. Although not the case all the time, Internet can suck at times (timeouts, 404 errors)—it's like we have to call the ISP every few months. As for Air Conditioning, it wouldn't be a problem for Indians as we've adapted to these temperature. Could definitely be hard for you. > Medicines are not stocked properly... > 12am to 9am, there are no awake caretakers... > Laundary cleaning is disorganized and inconsistent. Some serious problems, these. Maybe you should get really serious about this. Did you let Dr. Sarin know about these issues? Approx. Rs. 50,000 per month is a lot of money for lodging and food. The service should be much more proper. Hope you get things sorted out and have a peaceful time. Let us know if the situation changes.

Excellent post Dryani. Anyone who is considering India for their LL should be absolutely required to read your journal. Thanks for having your good and bad sections to clarify both.... you seem to be very objective in your observations.
Gave you a karma nod for your info and great strength you have showed during your lengthening....... how far have you lengthened so far?

Thanks with the update bro, hopefully Dr. Sarin will get this matter taken care of. As a westerner I can relate how dreadful it is to be in that kind of weather without A/C. Hang in there man, you're close to being done.

Minor Update: (regarding previous post)
I spoke to Sarin tonight, and he explained that the reason the halls and common rooms can not be cooled is due to the high electricity cost (so it is not Sunny's fault - I wanted to clarify that). I do think it would be better to charge a little more for rent and to keep the halls cool, but I also deeply respect Sarin for doing everything possible to keep the cost to us down. Note - Even when others suggest that Sarin raise the price for rent and/or the surgery, he has consistently been adamantly against doing so.
About Medicines, Night-time caretakers, and Laundary: I have not spoken to Sarin about these things, because I want them to be handled consistently by staff whose job it is to take care of us each day. Note that these three issues are annoying, but they are not large problems in my opinion.
The generator was just now fixed. I hope it will now remain stable.
I will keep you all updated of any major developments, and will also write an additional "state of the guest house" just before I leave.
to 6ftby2014 - Thanks friend. I've lengthened 7.5cm in my right leg, and 6.8cm in my left leg (based on x-rays). The reason for the left leg loss was the pin replacement surgery. Getting really close to finishing!
to Need2BTaller - Thank you. I think I'm pretty much in the homestretch right now, but I still believe that Sarin is the best option in the world to lengthen and I want it to be as nice as possible.

I agree with Mr. Incredible. There's nothing that Dr. Sarin (nor anyone close to Dr. Sarin) can do about the power outages and lack of proper internet in India. What's much more important is the following:
1) Lack of elevator service 2) lack of medicine 3) lack of proper, clean, and sanitized clothing and sheets, blankets, towels, and pillows.
Hopefully, Dr. Sarin will be able to save enough money from the large influx of patients to fix these problems. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your uploading XDhope your journey goes fine. well i have a couple of questions. 1)How did you pay the fee?as for me i would like to pay one by a credit card. but i found it has limit of paying. becuase it is so big money,im wondering if i can pay one at one time. 2)If you paid one through transfer like bank, would you tell about it?3)is the fee going to be changed in the future?more resonable or higher?4)Did you buy one way or two way ticket?

Congrats on being almost done! Just a quick question: I know that Dr. Sarin is currently treating quite a few MMT members at the moment, but do you know how many total cosmetic leg lengthening cases he's got at the moment? Is he really swamped? Thanks.

One of the most ground breaking diaries on the site. This record along with Crazy's has pretty much been a game changer in terms of the way people view India for this surgery.
As a side note, I spoke with my grandfather the other night at length (he does not know about my intentions at all), he is retired and getting on a bit (80 years). Now he was in the sales business for his whole working life.
Rightly or wrongly that generation in the UK tend to be prejudice about races other than their own. My grandfather does not rate a lot of the UK's closest allies but he has nothing but respect for Indians. He said in his experience they are incredibly responsible, ethical people who you can trust.
I have grown up around lots of different cultures so hanging around with people of many different races is the norm to me and I view everyone on an even basis. But to hear such praise about India and it's people from him really was reassuring.
(He would not trust an Italian however. LOL. God knows why!)

Nice description of the house Dryani-
I must also add to the "bad" list, that the un-attached bathroom shared by 3 folks living on 2nd floor (or 1st floor to those guys who call the starting floor, a ground floor) is very very tiny that a decent-size office chair wont even fit, and has no room to shower. Secondly, the kitchen and cleaning staff should better manage flies (although flies are common in summer even in U.S.)
On the side of "good", Dr Sarin's primary focus is to attend to everyone's primary needs - post-operative medical needs during the lengthening and post-lenthening phases. Everything else becomes secondary although very important and he is on his way to fix elevator, fix generator problems, provide TV and fridge in each room, provide games, entertainment, etc to make everyone's day go faster and enjoyable, in addition to already providing an expensive "posh" house, excellent food, uninteruppted high-speed internet, comfortable beds, care-takers for each floor, in-house cook, etc, etc - all at low-cost.

Dryani: Okay, it looks like you've missed my other question. What software did you use to create this mockup of your room? Looks nice! Hey, MrIncredible, that is Dryani's expertise and profession. He makes his own software or his company or something like that! Hey Dryani, you're almost done. Hang in there. Pretend you're in Florida with me because it is freaking hot here. Only here have I showered and then started sweating while I am drying myself off with a towel. I know it's probably hotter there in India, but you're almost at the finish line. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Hey, MrIncredible, that is Dryani's expertise and profession. He makes his own software or his company or something like that!
I don't think so. There are tools like Google SketchUp which can be used to build quick mockups. And I think Dryani is using something like that. I would love to know what it is, the mockup is kewl!
