Hey Dryani! I'm literally addicted to reading your diary. .  How are you feeling?

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind:

This might be a stupid one but after the lengthen is finished and the internal device is locked at lower end, are you left with visible pins at the bottom of your legs for 2 years before the internal device is removed? Also, do you know how much it costs to have the internal device removed?

Also, regards to your living situation, do you ever go out and leave the guesthouse, is this even possible to do when lengthening?

Thanks,

Soapey

No, When the frames are removed, the internal nail is locked and remains in your bone until it is removed. No pins are left after frame removal.

The frames are nice and light and they are making my legs their b*tch, if I had to describe the feel of the frames it would be a mix of rainbows wrapped around my legs and a Russian Dominatrix punishing me for all the bad things I have done in my life.

Update:

     Current pain level

Pain - My current pain level reflects how I feel when I have kept my left leg straight for quite a while and have not forgotten to take a muscle relaxant and an anti-inflammatory. If either of these things changes, my pain shoots up very quickly. Sleep is very difficult because staying in one position for so long becomes very uncomfortable, and if I move in my sleep the pain will wake me up.

Surgery - In a few hours I will be going to the hospital to have my troublesome pin removed. At this time, one or two more pins will be placed in slightly different locations to replace the lost pin.

Opiates - I am still on my opiate break, and I believe it has been about five days now. I think it is important to take an occasional break from all opiates like Proxyvon (Darvocet), and to a lesser extent, Tramadol. By doing this, you should be able to ensure that not only will you not become addicted to opiates, but that your short-term tolerance levels remain low. This will enable the opiates to do their job with full strength when you really need them.

Opiate addiction - From my research, opiate addiction comes in a staggeringly wide-spread range. My friend became addicted to opiates after being fed oxycodone multiple times a day for several weeks following a severe compound fracture. The withdrawal symptoms for him included terrible physical, mental, and emotional effects for about three sleepless days. The opiates used here are much weaker than my friend was taking, but the moral of the story is to keep your opiate intake as light as possible and to take breaks whenever possible.

Medicine information - Two of our patients have a lot of medical knowledge, and one of them has written a comprehensive guide for LL patients concerning medicine. I will not say more about him for privacy reasons, but I will say that I personally take his medical advice as 100% sound. This guide is located at www.sarinsguesthouse.com (which has restricted access - see the thread in the "Off Topic" category of this forum to see if you qualify). This guide should be required reading for all future patients here in India!

to Dookieman - Thanks friend; I'm still plugging along!

to Arche - Thanks! The frames do look really nice, but on the other hand I like the fact that my heavier frames keep my muscles stronger... or would if I wasn't rooted to my bed by nerve pain lol.

to Mdragon - Thank you Smiley Kaizen replied earlier today to describe how the frames feel.

to Reach_Higher - Thanks; I can't wait until I'm updating my diary from home with my bird eating grapes in my shirt.

to Soapey - Thanks! The nerve pain has made life a lot more difficult, but thinking about the fact that I'm more than halfway done makes me feel excited and happy.

When the IM nail is locked at the bottom, the screws are meant to be as flush with the bone as possible (from my understanding). This means that they should be completely visually unnoticeable. It is possible for the bone to push the screws out a bit over time, but I don't know how common this is. My friend has had his rod in for more than two years, and sees no reason to remove it.

I believe that Sarin charges $2,000 to remove the rods, but remember that IM rods are common and can be removed anywhere. I plan to leave my rods in permanently unless a screw causes a problem for me.

It is possible to leave the guesthouse if you have a wheelchair that has removable legs (so that it can fit in the elevator). However, the heat has been so great lately that nobody would want to stay outside for more than a few minutes. Perhaps when it cools down in a couple weeks we will go on an excursion.

to STsacrifice4LTgain - That is some very valuable information. It might be a good idea for SysOp to create a stickied "Pre-LL tips" topic.

Awesome, reading this makes my happy for you too! Keep it up mate!

Yeah I can see why you would just leave the IM rods in, but mentally I don't think I could keep them in.  Also as I travel a lot I think the hassle of taking longer going through airport security would really bother me!

Do you know if by removing the rods, you only add to the scars?

I guess staying inside must get quite boring for you, do you have a consistant, fast internet connection?

Also regarding the guesthouse, do you feel safe there? Because India can be a dangerous place and if anyone was to break in, there isn't much that you guys could do to defend yourselves.  Were you able to see the guesthouse before your operation?

Thanks!

I don't think you would want to mess with a bunch of crazy cripples who's pain tolerance has reached freakish levels haha. It would not be a pretty scene. I have felt perfectly safe here and I'm sure everyone else here feels the same way....unless we have a p*ssy hidden among us haha.

Dryani and Sacrifice. There is a thread called " Things I know about LL that I wish I knew before LL", it is meant for just this sort of thing...... letting everyone know what to do, what to bring and what to expect. I started this thread a while ago and it would be great for you guys to post your insights on it....... would be great for SysOp to make it sticky so its' a little easier to find but there are already many many great tips and insights on there.

Great to hear you are doing better Dryani. I waited to post until now ( Saturday) to honor your request...... I also hope you got my PM?  Cool

Always happy to help  Smiley
Yeah, he basically told me that my hemoglobin is higher than average & on the chart it says 'Out of Range'.. so I'm curious if that has any potential effects on LL recovery time?
When are you planning your LL journey or have you already began? Wish you the best..
I'm still undecided, but I know I will have this done around October time frame at the earliest, knock on wood, lol.

Dryani - Always and I mean always a pleasure to read your words. I'm glad you're going to get that pesky pain removed. Nerve pain as you described it is not to be messed with. Keep lengthening and stay strong buddy.

Kit up buddy! but also listen to your body! You should try and go for an excursion at some point, how often do yo find yourself in India?! Smiley

The more i read your diary the more i believe that India is the place i will come to do LL.

Has there been any complications with the other patients you are with/ have you heard of any major complications under Dr. Sarin's care?

Hey Dryani,

Hope your pin surgery went well. It's very easy to read your diary cuz of how humble you are.

How much have you distracted thus far?

We are reaching the 3 month period, its getting close bud, just hang in there!

Thanks, TT

Hey man you're doing great! Keep it up and stay hydrated! Could you take some pictures of the frames and hospital when you feel better!? BTW you should make your own diary! It'll keep Dyrani's diary organized, and you'll have a place to vent and talk about your experience!

You're doing well man! Just think about what this will do for you in the long-term!

In addition to the staying hydrated recommendation, I'm wondering if the offer any extended release pain killers? I think taking this might help with getting some sleep through the night, while you're in so much pain. I wish you the best and that the pain is short lived.

Just finished reading the whole diary.
Excellent documentation Dryani.

Much appreciated. I'm seriously considering Dr. Sarin now because of this diary.

Update:

     Current pain level

Pin surgery - The pin replacement surgery went very well. I had the surgery on Saturday morning (June 23rd), and went home later that night. The surgery was done under general anesthesia with an IV drip. After the surgery, I felt pain and pressure around my legs, and it stayed that way for several hours in the hospital ward. I was given periodic Tramadol drips for pain relief, but I have known for some time that I am one of the unlucky people that really aren't affected by Tramadol. I was supposed to stay the night in the hospital, but I asked to go back to the guest house. I took the pain management into my own hands with Proxyvon (Darvocet), taking one pill Saturday night, and one pill early Sunday morning. Because I had not taken any opiates for about 7 days at that point, the two Proxyvon pills were excellent at dealing with the post-surgery pain.

My knee was stiff and I felt pain when bending it for about three days after the surgery, but after that the pain quickly tapered off.

The nerve pain associated with bending my knee was completely resolved by the surgery. However, the skin in that area is still sensitive to the touch; it will take a bit of time for the nerve branch to completely repair itself. This is not a problem, since the frame keeps most anything from touching the skin at that location anyway.

Emotional status - I am in an extreme amount of emotional pain due to things unrelated with leg lengthening, to the point that I am continually fending off a breakdown. I am practicing as much emotional and mental control as I can possibly muster.

Lengthening - I have now lengthened to 5.1cm, and have increased my rate of lengthening. I alternate between 1mm and .66mm. For example, Monday will be 1mm, Tuesday .66mm, Wednesday 1mm, and so on. Sarin told me that my x-rays look fine and there don't appear to be any problems. This rate of lengthening averages to .83mm/day, which is definitely pushing the envelope for a post-5cm patient, but it is not entirely unreasonable. I am filling my head with fantasies of 9cm, mainly to mask the emotional pain I am feeling with excitement. If I continue at this rate, I will be able to easily reach 9cm by my completion date (the end of August).

Entertainment and overall status - I have been playing video games and watching movies to keep myself entertained, and they are working quite well. Right now I can feel all of my pins cutting, so I am in a fair bit of pain, but it is totally manageable.

Medication - I have not had any Proxyvon (or other opiates) since last Sunday, meaning it's been about eight days. When the pain is a bit heavy, or I when I need to go to sleep, I take one "Nise" (anti-inflammitory) and one Flexura D (muscle relaxant). At most I take two Nise tablets and two Flexura D tablets a day.

Dreams - My dreams have been steadily increasing in intensity and negative emotional effect.

Diaries - I totally don't mind other Sarin patients posting their experiences on here, especially if they keep their posts organized like ST and Kaizen do. This diary has never been for me; it has been for all of you back at home considering this procedure. Crazy+6 opened this place up to me, and now I am opening it up to all of you.

Internet Speed - The internet is fast enough to do most things, but when playing online games (typically hosted in USA or Europe), you can expect a ping of 250 to 350ms. This rules out most first person shooters, but leaves in most other types of multiplayer games.

The internet is paid for up to the first 30gb of data each month. After that, the cost is about $0.54 per GB (when bought in blocks of 50GB). If you are a moderate to heavy internet user, expect to pay between $15 and $40 per month for internet.

Airtel India Internet Speeds (7/2/2012 6am)DownloadUploadPing
Local speed2.29Mbps.84Mbps28ms
When communicating with USA West server2.09Mbps.64Mbps312ms
When communicating with USA East server1.97Mbps.57Mbps332ms

Note - The above speeds are rated in MegaBITS, not MegaBYTES. One MB is composed of (practically) 10Mb, so a speed of 2.29Mbps is actually 229KBs, or about 1/4MB per second. A typical MP3 song can be about 5MB, meaning that it would take about 20 seconds to download.

to Soapey - I think that rod removal would not make too much of a difference to your scars, but this depends on how the skin below moves during the lengthening process. If your skin is in the same place, then the doctor could just make new incisions right on top of the old scars. If the skin moves, then the incisions will likely have to be new ones.

The internet connection is pretty nice here; because of your question I added the "Internet Speed" topic above.

to Parmis - I have sent you a PM with the password to SarinsGuestHouse.com.

to IwannabeastallasTimTebow - Thank you very much. I am over the halfway mark now and very excited.

to Gneriec Urensmae - I am very happy that the diary has been useful to you. Please post if you have any questions.
