Short-term pain 4 Long-term gain

« Reply #40 on: July 19, 2012, 10:55:24 PM »

As your roommate and as your friend.. I'd like to be the 1st to say that I am very proud of you for coming to grips with your present situation & genuinely looking to improve upon it. That is a sign of maturity & growth.
We had a great discussion today and although some of the things I had to discuss w/ you may have not been easy for you to hear.. you showed incredible awareness and maturity afterwards when you said to me 'wow, your right. I realize the way I've been acting lately and it's not right'..

Many people live their ENTIRE loves sticking to their foolish pride & stubbornness & are NEVER able to live a full & happy life. I've always believed that the 1st step to change is having 'awareness' & you've proven that you GET IT with this incredible post..
And I've always said since day 1.. the height gain is just 'the icing on the cake'. A journey as humbling & taxing as this builds you up from within.. your inner strength, your resolve, your willpower, your character etc.. it will test your patience in every way possible & when it's all done.. it SHOULD make all of us more appreciative of all the TINY LITTLE THINGS in this life that we so often take for granted.

Happiness comes from within, it's not a matter of externals. I also believe that happiness & appreciation go hand in hand. People who are never satisfied.. always looking for more & more are generally very unhappy people & until we all learn to appreciate the little things in life (no pun), I don't think it'll be easy to find consistent happiness.

One final note.. Even though I'm 9 years older than you (as of today!  Cheesy) I have a TON of things I also need & want to improve on. And dont think for a second that anyone who 'appears' to have their act together.. doesn't have their own inner issues & areas in life they wanna improve on. We're all looking to improve.. or at least we all should be  Tongue

Again.. excellent post & I'm about to give you a karma nod u crazy dirty filthy scottish scoundrel haha  Grin

ARCHE!

I would have you know, cleaning my arse is far to dangerous and big of a task for anyone but myself to do and Sukesh is not made to do anything of the sort.

Arche, be a doll and admit you would love to wipe my imperial arse.

Yes, Master "Dr.SarinDiaryBlog," I love wiping your imperial arse.

Alreet everyone! I'm back because I realize i've been blue balling everyone about some info about lengthening.

There has been a lot discussion about how to lengthen optimally, so I will dedicate this post to what I have felt to be optimal for me.  Some contributing factors may only apply to me because I'm already almost 5,10 and have the arrogance and mentality to rape Superman.

On a side note, I realize there has been a lot of politics and accusations going on around MMT. I welcome any open criticisms and rebuttals from anyone out there feeling brave. Please be prepared with lotion before doing so.

Ahem.. okay, so about Lengthening and all the fun technicalities of distracting.

The dangers you want to avoid are:
1.Underdeveloped callous because you lengthened too fast
2.Knee bending
3.Infections
4.Twinkle toes, i.e the infamous Ballerina
5.Weak pulse in your foot along with pins and needles because your stretching your nerves and have reached their capacity

Number 1 is the one that is most time consuming because it requires you to wind back or wait until the callous has caught up with the rate of lengthening.

However non-union may be the result of an infection, in which case you will require immediate medical attention.
2,4 and 5 can be somewhat avoided by physiotherapy and stretching. However some people have naturally less "give" laxity or stretch which requires them to distract much slower than 1mm a day.

Infections can be treated with antibiotics or if it becomes chronic or malignant requires pin removal and possibly relocation. Sounds fun so far huh?

Pain usually comes from muscle tension which is bearable but can also come from nerve or tendon irritation which requires more drastic measures other than medication.

I am now at 4.6 cm (planning to do 2.9cm more) and so far have not experienced any major complications other than a few infections that went away with antibiotics.

You will know when you have an infection because instead of complaining about pain you will be shouting about pain. I stretch and do exercises by crawling up and down stairs due to the lack of an elevator in a 3 storey building.

I do 1mm a day turning 4 times a day and have felt relatively comfortable so far, currently typing away with no pain at all.

I make no recommendations or by no means a prime example because everyone is different which makes it almost impossible to accurately work out the truly optimal way of lengthening.

For me my top priority is to get a good nights rest, eat like a horse and try and stay positive by drooling over Brad pitt and the beautiful 100m hurdles olympian Michelle Jenneke.

So, know that there is nobody here who'd rather be anywhere else and many have already reaped the rewards of this surgery.

24 days left for me until frame removal..ahem sorry until FREEEEEDOM!!!

SO bring it on lads, lets have ya. Let's get this banter started!

That's good to see you got a sense of humor during the process. I thought the recommend number is 0.66mm for Tibias.

I was wondering how are the patients in the guesthouse moving about, like are they walking around with support and light exercising ?  Do you feel that the frames are solid enough to support moving around?

Infections can happen, I was very careful however I do have a lot of feet sweating and I was moving around a lot. Moving around and standing in a non-air conditioned environment can take it's toll. Pin sites must stay dry and I guess I was unlucky because I got them moist from whatever activity I was involved in.

***PLEASE READ***

My experience with Doctor Amar Sarin in India can be best summed up by the following e-mail I sent him to which I got no reply. If you are contemplating having surgery by this doctor, please keep on reading.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Dr Amar Sarin,

During most of the procedure I have felt victimized and I believe the standard of post operative care which was separately paid for, fell below the minimum standard. Because of the following reasons I strongly demand compensation.

During the first month of post surgery, the guesthouse frequently had power outs meaning no air conditioning in the middle of an Indian summer and no light. When patients are in the amount of discomfort and pain they are already in, every step should be taken to try and make sure even the basics are kept.

Gurgaon at the time having power shortages is not a good enough reason for patients living without AC or light. A house with a fully equipped generator should of been provided.

Then to have to deal with the nuisance of moving because of issues regarding personal matters of the doctor and the manager of the building management is extremely unfair for the patients.

My credit card was taken away from me because a transfer was deemed too slow. My credit card was charged to various establishments including a "Jewelers" without my permission and furthermore over 312 dollars was overdrawn causing a deficit in my bank  account which meant I had to pay extra fee's and charges from the bank.

This was all done without the adequate communication as to what was going on and it took over 2 months since I asked for the overdrawn money to be paid back to me to be reimbursed.

The post operative care of 1000 dollars a month was agreed by the manager and doctor to which the patient can expect a certain level of care and service.

I was distraught to find out the level of nutrition provided was that of Mcdonalds chicken sandwich and chips for lunch and KFC fried chicken pieces for dinner, every, single, day.

Not only this I have taken over 120 photo's of the guesthouse to prove the sanitation of the kitchen and the living areas. Parts of the kitchen was so infested with mold it could well be a health hazard, especially when they are so close to where the clean dishes are kept.

As for  the staff or caretakers, they were unqualified to look after disabled patients with one of the staff member being only 16. They were both at the beginning barely able to break through the language barrier for 100 percent international patients.

One was so inattentive and immature he got fired meaning we did not always receive the care we needed and at times caused an unnecessary amount of stress.

From some patients it was described as a "middle school operation"

At the hotel which I was eventually transferred to because the situation had become so bad at the previous establishment the toilet was almost completely inaccessible for someone in a wheelchair, which meant nearly all patients were forced to crawl on their backsides to enter the toilets. This was extremely inconvenient.

Also, the patients living in the adjacent room had accidentally spilled urine on the floor and immediately requested the urine to be cleaned up. The staff all but obliged to "sweep" the urine under their beds and left it to putrefy over a few days. They argued it was not their job and there was nothing they could do. The stench was foul and attracted flies and a number of bugs which is especially worrying when we all have exposed open wounds susceptible to infection. The most basic expectations of hygiene was often ignored by the caretakers and especially by Anil (the nurse)

He often handled our frames without gloves, touched very close to the pin sites, even when asked not to. The tool that is used to remove the stitches were obviously not washed and nearly all patients complained he was clumsy and often rushed and generally did not handle with care. The stitches on me were removed far to early which caused the skin at my knee to rip open and cause disfiguring scars.

I have kept a voice recording of most of the meetings and consultations between Dr Sarin and myself. One of which on July 19, 2012, 19:13:18 PM I have a recording of the doctor shouting at me abusively using the word "****" directly at myself.

I requested to see the doctor about a possible infection which he confirmed my suspicions were correct and got told it was my fault because I lengthened too fast and not because of the disgusting conditions I was put in. I.e the comforter being almost putrid having not being washed for all the 2 weeks I was there.

Antibiotics were then not given to me for 3 whole days, when eventually on the 3rd day I had to plead for antibiotics. I do not believe this is professional and I felt very intimidated for the situation I was in, in the vulnerable state I was also in a foreign country. I believe from then on I was treated with indifference for when the doctor would make check ups on the other patients I was completely ignored.

2 weeks later, I came down with a fever and could barely move. I kept on being sick and had diarrhea and so I requested medical attention. The next day I was given a blood test and found the lymphocyte count confirmed an infection. The doctor warned of possible Malaria infection. That night I received no care with the staff no-where to be seen. I had diarrhea, unable to move had no choice to defecate on the bed. Again an example of the incompetence of staff.

Doors were frequently left open by staff even when repeatedly asked otherwise allowing the mosquito's to enter the room promoting the chances of Malaria.

When I complained about the services and the lack of urgency in management and staff such as when they lost my passport I was again shouted at by Dr Amar Sarin saying everything has it's own "sweet timing" and that I had become a nuisance. This was completely uncalled for and lacked any materiel.

Unfortunately I have no voice recording of this incident of the doctor berating me in the state I was in then.

A follow up check was made by Dr. Sarin for the infection on the bottom pin of my right foot. He quite brutally told me to not complain and pressed around the infected site without any gloves asking if there was any pain. This was possibly one the most reckless of behaviors by the doctor and directly stemmed from his abhorrence towards me.

As the procedure went on I was told if I got any complaints from management or staff or I caused any inconvenience he would immediately take off my frames and send me home even if I hadn't reached my desired target of lengthening.

From then on even though I was suffering from nerve pain he refused medicine be given to me with the exception of one painkiller at night. I felt the repercussions would be far too severe to complain so I felt obligated to keep from raising my concerns and suffered till I had my frames off.

The last of the abuse I suffered from the doctor was the day after frame removal when I felt due to the extremely hot temperature of the bandages causing me to sweat into my open wounds took off the bandages for the fear of infection.

The doctor immediately again lost his temper and said the following.

"I have one word for you, go to hell"

I have no voice recording of this however my roommate is a witness and is still shocked at the treatment I got.

I have raised some of the many issues I have experienced whilst lengthening in India. This was the worst experience I have ever gone through. I have never been obliged with any form of apology or recognition of the issues that were brought up.

The first 2 months of my stay can be said with confidence did not conform to the minimum standard of care so I ask that at least the money I paid for those months be reimbursed as soon as possible.

If not I have no other choice but to report this to higher authorities to get back some compensation for the treatment I received.

The excuse that this is what is to be expected when the price is so cheap is absolutely unacceptable especially when developed countries such as South, Korea is now providing a much more advanced internal device ISKD for exactly 12,000 euros with much cheaper post operative care at a much higher standard.

Also the full weight internal bearing Bliskinov nail with 6 months stay is being offered in Ukraine for 18000 euros I believe India is now not such a cheap alternative with it's external method and poor quality of post operative care.

The personal grievances between the doctor and myself can only be understood as mutual misunderstanding.

I hope from this you find no cause to be offended and see that I have not exaggerated and have told the truth. I have evidence, photo's and voice recordings to solidify everything I have brought up to attention.

Please take this with utmost seriousness and I wait for your response.

Sincerely,
X

As much as I respect the dedication to try to remain as objective as possible, I believe some patients there were willing to overlook certain inadequacies and misfortunes with respect to the larger picture. I cannot speak for someone else, but I believe Dryani himself would let us know that some failings on Sarin's part were completely unacceptable and unprofessional. Regardless of price, a certain stand of care MUST be maintained. Having piss remain on floors, bugs allowed to fester around open wounds, and being fed a fast food diet by "caretakers" who are not even close to adults, must be considered not only unacceptable, but negligent as well. But as has been said, it is India. You reap what you sow. I wanted to go there as well, but I have faith in the good Scot that what he is telling is unbiased and the truth.
