For those who have lengthened with Betz, what is the cost for implanting the titanium locking nails following lengthening? I assume that this is an additional cost not included in the standard price.  Also, how necessary are they? The Betzbone itself is advertised as being a fully weight-bearing device.  Is it incorrect to assume that you can walk (with crutches) on the Betzbone while a bone bridge is being formed following lengthening? Thank you for this diary and the information you have provided.

I'm in early consolidation now and I walking every day with crutches. In fact I've been walking every day since the op in feb. I chose not to get titaniums - they're roughly 12k euros but not for that reason, but because I think it's only necessary if you have slow bone growth. I'm also finding that using my treadmill without crutches (but holding the bars for support) is great for emulating a walking motion that is hard to get with crutches.

Thought I'd achieved goal of 9.2cm on 24 May 2014 but my new height would suggest I managed 10cm!

I have been walking without crutches in my house for about 1 month now. When I go out I only take one crutch (to show people that I am still recovering and to help me with stairs, escalators and for general support). I almost never use both crutches now.

The titanium nails are often necessary due to slow bone healing.   The reason is the mechanical instability of the clicking mechanism which sometimes prevents bone healing.   Therefore it is not only connected with the question of weight bearing capabilities which are not clearly defined anyway.   Here you have a clear advantage of nails like Precise and Fitbone which don't have the twisting motion.  Cost for titanium from Betz is around 17kEuro for both legs as far as i remember.
